Samak Rice Khichdi


A delicious Khichdi recipe made with Samak rice is one of the satvic meals during religious fasting, especially in Navaratri. Sama Rice also known as moriyo, varai, samvat or vrat ke chawal, is a small sized rice slightly bigger than Suji grains.

  • Preparation 20 Minutes
  • Cooking Time 25 Minutes


  • 2 Medium Tomatoes
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Cumin Seeds
  • 1 Medium Potato
  • 2-3 Green Chili
  • 1/2 Juiced Lemon
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Salt
  • For Frying Ghee
  • 2 Small Carrot
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Red Chili Powder
  • 1/4 Teaspoon Black Pepper
  • 1 Cup Samak Rice



  1. Wash and soak Samak rice for 15 Minutes.  
  2. Wash and cut the potato in small chunks.
  3. Fry Popato in Ghee.
  4. Chop Tomato and Carrot in small pieces.


  1. Heat Ghee in a pan and add Cumin Seeds (Jeera) in it.
  2. When Cumin seeds start crackling add Tomatoes and then add Green chili and carrots.
  3. Fry for 2 to 3 minutes and add spices.
  4. Add 2 cups of water.
  5. After the water start boiling put the rice, cover and cook for 10 minutes. 
  6. Then add lemon juice and remove from the flame.


Garnish with chopped Chilies and coriander leaves.
